Circle the Avalon
Club Challenge
Objective: to have FUN on the water!
Participation: open to all KNL club members
Start date: 28 October 2005
End points for route: Come By Chance and Sunnyside, NL
Route: paddles must not go beyond 500 metres from the Avalon shoreline
Maximum crossings: up to 1 kilometre
Reporting: only trips submitting a complete Circle the Avalon report will be included.
Updates on progress: submitted reports will be accumulated and mapped by KNL. Updated maps will be posted regularly on the KNL website.
Safety: KNL strongly recommends that kayakers never paddle in conditions beyond their training, ability, and experience. Always ensure that all paddlers in your group have the appropriate level of kayaking skills and experience. Also ensure that all paddlers are wearing their PFD and adequate thermal protection, and have the safety gear required by the Canadian Coast Guard. Be able to summon help if you need it (cell phone, VHF radio, flares).
Trip organization: KNL club paddles on the Avalon will be included. However, most paddles will be organized informally (see nf.paddling newsgroup) and will not be KNL club paddles. KNL has no responsibility for the safety of these informal paddles. Individual paddlers are always responsible for their own safety and comfort.
Trip planning & leadership: ensure that paddles are thoroughly planned. Review maps and charts of the route, identify landing sites and escape routes, be realistic in planning the distance of the trip, and review weather forecasts, sea states, currents, and tide tables. Trip leaders should have CRCA Level 2 training (or equivalent). Ensure all paddlers are comfortable with the evolving paddling conditions.
Navigation: trip leaders need topographic maps or marine charts of the trip route. All paddlers are encouraged to have a map or chart, and practice their navigation skills. Take a compass on the paddle. Taking a GPS and learning how to use it can be a big help, especially when visibility is limited.
Your help is needed: KNL is collecting information on kayak landing sites and camping areas. You are asked to visit the KNL web page http://www.kayakers.nf.ca/members_lounge/landusedatasheet.html and download the form for recording this information on your paddle. Please submit the information to KNL with your trip report.
Don’t forget to submit a report of your trip to KNL when you get back.

This schedule is subject to change without notice.Kayak Newfoundland and Labrador assumes no responsibility for the safety of participants. We reserve the right to deny participation in any paddle or event.
